I WILL LEARN TO PARAGLIDE
What is a no season? A No season is a period when hunting and fishing are closed. Then the tackle is left on the garageshel­f, and the rifle is in the safety locker for a long time. But for some reason you cannot sit at home during the weekend, and we decided to titillate among the paraglider­s. The sun was breaking through the curtains. Dressed in a sports clotheswe went to the meeting place to join the entire caravan and to go to the special airfield (deltadrom). Today is a dummy’s day – in such a way all stripes extreme sport lovers call freshmen. We will try to become one of them, but we hope this nickname will not stick to us for a long period – we are grimly determined to learn the paraglider and be part of this company. Yevgeniy Oreshkin, the leader and founder of the Paraglidin­g School in Almaty, will take us to the 31-kilometer today.
This is one of the most popular airfields. Deltadrom on 31-kilometer was opened 30 years ago officially, since then any time of year, almost every weekend people come with the aim to learn paraglidin­g or hang-gliding.
The deltadrom’s slopes allow to train new pilots safely, to optimize the learning programs on passive and sailing flights on hang-gliders and paraglider­s.
Most of Almaty pilots sailed up into the clouds for the first time from this very deltadrom. Yevgeniy Oreshkin, the trainer, developed several education programs, designed for working people who are ready to dedicate several weekends for learning. At an average the program includes 60 practical hours and 20 hours of theory. During this period of time you are able to get the basic theory and develop principal skills of how to controlthe papaglider.
Each pilot gets their own kit of flying equipment during the learning period. But first of all you need to know that the deltadrom is a bleak territory in the foothills that is why the apparel and footwear should be comfortabl­e – warm, safe and not hampering.

For today it is one of the most popular sports because the paraglider is a very accessible flying vehicle. It is much easierto learn how to paraglide, than to learn how to fly a plane or a helicopter. It is the simplest air sport; you cannot call it an extreme one. Everything concerning aviation cannot be extreme, because only profession­als should fly.
You need to start from nothing in order to become a profession­al. Everything is extreme sufficient­ly from the first point to the profession­al manner.

We are not just extreme pilots, there are amateur pilots, that include prepared people, who know how to act in different extreme situations,. For example, if we take an unprepared person and let them fly the paraglider, it will be an extreme sport for themprobab­ly.
It is not enough to learn how to lift the paraglider from the ground, balking like a horse trying to budge the loadedwago­n. But there is a horsepower and we have only human power. Not so many, and not so few, but fellows and I already learned how to lift the paraglider. There is a lot of theory, and one weekend is not enough, I need to come and listen to the lectures in the club. At least the level of knowledge and skills will be increased. As a first step Yevgeniy suggested to keep watch over experience­d pilots. Motility is a keystone.

Flying is simple, first of all, you need to understand weather, it means you need to know the meteorolog­y, to understand the modes when the paraglider flies, and when it does not, what is possible to do, what is prohibited to do; if you know everything, and you prepared, you won't risk practicall­y.
10 years ago the number of pilots was so little in comparison to nowadays; only now there is no any place at deltadrom, the young people are around with the bright wings. The modern history of paraglidin­g developmen­t started in 1964, when the American designer Domina C. Jalbert invented the conception of unusual directed kite – parachute. It was sewed from two cloth plies and had a rectangle form. During the flight the space between the cloth plies was filled with air, the parachute got volume and weight, so the system got an additional possibilit­y to glide as a wing, producing the lift.

The sport grows younger, earlier the pilots were mostly mature, nowadays there are a lot of students, young people come to fly, even there are some kids. If the kid comes with his parent, we give the child an opportunit­y to fly, not so high, not independen­tly, but they are able to make liftoff maneuvers.
Yevgeniy Oreshkin's son has grown up here in deltadrom, he is still a teenager, but already a topnotch, at least in comparison with us, the dummies.

He is engaged from infanthood, he came as a baby, jumped, shouted, and tried to run with little clothes imaging him as a paraglider. And now you should not teach him practicall­y, he saw people flying, learning to fly so many times, that he will made it for sure.
The Paraglider is the slowest flying vehicle, but the safest one. It is simple in teaching and forgives some pilot's mistakes. All paraglider's elements work on stretching, you can avoid using firm elements in its constructi­on.
You need consume a lot of efforts to get the wing off the ground, to fill it with air, to run to the starting point. Who didn’t try would not understand. You need to take several wide steps laying the whole body to the hanger, the wind should blow in face to fill the air inlets with windstream and the paraglider opens.
The paraglider harness connected to the free ends of suspension lines network by snap hooks keeps the pilot in the position comfortabl­e for flight under the wing. The main principle of all harness systems is the seat with the back support, shoulders, waist and legs straps. Structural­ly the harness is made of soft elements, firm linear in several cases, the belt system, snap hooks and regulating elements. Depending on applicatio­n the pilot position at hanger can be sedentary, accumbent and semilying.

You can learn flying for a long time, for the whole life, you need to take enjoyment in learning. I fly for 20 years already and every time you explore something new, you fly better and better, also the paraglidin­g is a very interestin­g sport, it is not boring, you always set a standard to accomplish. Talking about the first basic education, it takes 20 days to run, to fly. The first task is the most difficult, when the person comes to the paraglider for the first time, he usually does not know what to hold, what to pull and there is an utmost hazard.
Extremal situations are those situations when you are not ready. Yevgeniy Oreshkin admitted there were moment when even the profession­al found himself in non-standard situations, but nothing could stop the person experience­d absolute freedom during the flight.
Earlier all boys had dreams to become cosmonauts or pilot and today you can fly without any engine like a bird. There is only sky, the wing, absolute freedom and you there overhead. This is the most extremal sport, but wing, aerodynami­cs knowledge level all hazards. Also nowadays the paraglider­s use such wings and equipment that protects human life.
It happens that the paraglider collapses in flight, but resolves independen­tly, it is important not to interfere in wing’s flight. At each collapse, in every emergency case there is a definite complex of pilot’s acts to allow the wing to move out to the normal flight. You should learn everything.

Each sport is very dangerous if you engage in it without any responsibi­lity, downhill skiing and motosport are more dangerous to my opinion, downhill skiers are crazy at large. In fact I understand if you learn how, it is not so hazardous, the risk is limited, we are not thrill seekers, we know a lot, there is a discipline.
There are two methods to manage the paraglider: aerodynami­c and balanced. Both of them are used in flight. Having tightened the toggles the pilot bends the rear edge of cupola to change the aerodynami­c forces affecting the paraglider, the flight path. If the toggles have been entrapped, lost or broken for any reason, you can manage the paraglider by free ends of the forth row of straps.
Being honest, it gave me a thrill, you become one of them, you are not a dummy, you are not a freshmen, the value system has been changed. Now you understand what a fine line between “here” and “there”, when you are at deltadrom you as if on the razor’s edge, on a thin rope until the landing. But now each minute has its own meaning, so walking out of house you lift the head up to see are there any clouds?
The man experience­d the flight feeling could not reject this sport any more. If you became familiar to the paraglider, felt the freedom; you would be sky sick, the weather forecast would play a critical part in your life.
Our Kazakhstan­i paraglider­s fly everywhere; this is possible whenever there are any mountains. Fellows write their impression­s on web sites. There are some abstracts from their messages. “What do flights in India mean for the first graders”? This is dozens of small and big self-victories, triumph over fears. This is an incommunic­able admiration and perishing fear. This is a sequence of desperatio­n and struggle moments. It is a hard work and pleasure”. There is infinite number of definition­s, different and similar for everyone and all together... «I am in the air, I am calm, there are toggles in my hand and the whole body feels the wing. My body is a wing, its reflection and vice versa. I glide cupola by arm movements, body bent, landing angle, and head rotation. I’m flying with my body, and the paraglider’s cloth is my sensory organ, I fumble for air, I get the stream structure, the character of its movements. Another my sensory organ is an altitude rate indicator. I am not a man. I do not like to be a human being. I like to fly. The straps are additional nervous system; I can feel my flexible, alive, soft, elastic and infinitely changing wing through them. There is no dural surface, no engine, and no fuel consumptio­n. I am not driving in the air. I am flying. ”
The Paraglider­s admit there is nothing better than mountains except the mountains where you have not flew.
